Letter to Parents
Week of February 01, 2021
Dear Canty Families:
Remote Learning continues this week as CPS and CTU continue to negotiate. Once there is an update on the first day of in person learning, we will update Canty families. If your child is returning for in person learning, please review the additional information at the end of this message.
As remote learning continues:
Please continue to check local media, cps.edu and email updates from the district. Canty specific updates will also continue.
There is a Friends of Canty virtual meeting this week. I encourage all families to get involved. Every single dollar they raise comes back to Canty. The Friends of Canty has supplied Canty students with Chromebooks, Birthday Books, Classroom Magazines, yard signs for Canty graduates, decorations for drive through graduation, dozens of orange cones for arrival, dismissal and recess, laundry basket and containers for each student returning to in person learning and much much more. With more hands even more can happen! Check out the flyer below and consider getting involved.

In Person Students - Cell Phone Policy
Before a child is allowed to have a cell phone at school, this Canty Student Cell Phone/Wireless Device Agreement must be completed and electronically signed. While students are in the building, during, before or after school hours, cell phones are ONLY allowed to be in the students’ backpacks and must be turned off! Cell phones are not allowed to be taken out of students’ backpacks or turned on until the students have left the building. If a student does not abide by these rules the following consequences (taken from Chicago Public School’s Student Code of Conduct, code 2-12) will be strictly enforced.
Parents with students returning should complete THIS form if the student is bringing a cell phone.
Attendance Google Meets Reminder
Please remember that your child should be logged into google meets for all subjects throughout the day. If a child misses even one subject area, the child’s attendance may change to a ½ day absence depending on the number of minutes missed. Please call the school with any questions!
Absences
Mrs. Swan thanks you for calling and emailing absences and connectivity issues for your children. Please remember to always include your child’s name, room number, grade, date of absence, parent/guardian name and phone number and include the teacher on the email. We encourage parents to review the CPS Health and Safety Protocols.
Students who are coming to school will need to complete a health screener every day at cps.edu/healthscreener. The health screener opens at 4:30am and should be entered by 7:30am. Students must have temperatures below 100.4 degrees and have no symptoms (ie: no runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, etc.). For more info: click the health screener FAQs

TARDY STUDENTS
- Students should stand six feet apart from one another in line.
- Security will record tardies at the front door, confirm that each student’s health screener has been completed and take temperatures.
- Security will complete the Tardy Log.
- Students will be marked as tardy immediately upon entering school. Tardy passes are not required at this time due to the circumstances.
EARLY DISMISSAL STUDENTS
- Parents/Guardians who enter the building must complete the screener. Parents/guardians must call the main office from outside the building to arrange early dismissal pickup.
- Schools are to record the call back number so the school can call the parent/guardian back when the child has been brought from class with his/her belongings.
- Parents/Guardians should wait outside Door 1 to pick up the child.
- Parents/Guardians should be ready to present identification for review.
- The school designee should bring the student to Door 1 with the Early Dismissal Log in hand, review the identification, and release the child, if appropriate
- The Early Dismissal Log and the writing tools used to record the early dismissals should remain together. The pen/pencil should be wiped down after use in case a different person is using the pen/pencil, or a school can have a clean pen container and used pen container, and wipe all used pens down at the end of the day.
- Schools should not get the student ready for an Early Dismissal before the Parent/Guardian calls from the school property.
- In the case an Early Dismissal results from the school calling due to a failed symptom screener or illness surfaced while in school, the Parent/Guardian will be provided with a Medical Exclusion form explaining why the student is being sent home. The student will wait in the Care Room for pick-up. Pick-up is to occur as soon as possible.

Staff are to have limited hands-on interactions with students to ensure everyone’s health and safety. With this in mind, we need your help in getting students ready to return. Please spend the next few weeks preparing your child to:
- Wear a mask for the entire school day except for a short eating break
- Taking off and putting on coats, hats, gloves and other clothing
- Opening food containers for lunch items
- Maintaining 6 feet distance from others
- All staff, students, and visitors must wear a mask while at school and on school grounds. Practice building your child’s ability to keep the face mask on for an extended period of time. Students will only be permitted to remove their masks when they are eating.
- Students who refuse to wear a mask may be removed from in person learning and required to do remote learning.
- All of the water fountains have been disabled. Students will need to bring a water bottle to school daily. Make sure your child’s water bottle has his or her name written on it.
- Students will not be permitted to share supplies, nor will there be communal supplies. Our teachers will communicate about supplies students will need. All supplies should be clearly labeled with the student’s name and homeroom number.
- Students will need to carry school issued Chromebooks or IPads to and from school the days they are here for hybrid instruction. Consider purchasing a pouch or cover to protect these. We do not have extra devices if a child forgets to bring his/her CPS device.
- For our students who did not borrow a Chromebook from the school, we have procured devices for those students to use when they are in person. Students who did not borrow a Chromebook from the school should not bring their own devices to school.
- We will need to stagger the times students enter and exit the building to allow for social distancing. Students may not enter the building until their assigned time. We will not be able to let students in early because of health protocols and inability to socially distance students. Do not bring your students to school outside of their assigned entry time. Please refer to the chart and attached map for more information.
- Specials classes and lunch/recess will be held in the classroom. Students will remain in the same classroom for instruction during the school day. Teachers who are departmental will move from classroom to classroom. The goal is for students to eventually go outside for recess.
- MOST IMPORTANT: The health and safety of students and staff will be prioritized before everything else. Do not send your child to school if he or she is ill. If a student has a temperature upon arriving at school or exhibits symptoms, he or she will be removed from the classroom. A parent/guardian or emergency contact will be contacted to pick up the child. While students are waiting to be picked up, they will be isolated in the care room to reduce the possibility of interacting with anyone else and possibly getting someone else sick.
Please continue to contact the school if you are struggling. When in doubt just reach out!
