Message from the Principal

Welcome to the Canty webpage. You will find here information about our school and some useful links. Canty is a great school that offers our students high quality educational and social experiences which prepare them for high school, college, and beyond. Canty's wonderful reputation has been built over the years by the hard work of teachers, students, and parents. We have amazing parents and community members who devote a lot of their time to the school by volunteering, participating in fundraising's and extracurricular activities, such as clubs and sports. Our dedicated staff provides Canty students with the best education as well as a variety of extracurricular activities, field trips, and after school programs. We are doing a lot with very little state and federal money.

ISATs are Coming!

March 6th - 16th all 3rd through 8th grade will take the ISAT.

Please consider the following for your children the two weeks we will take this test:

Get plenty of sleep each night

Eat Breakfast

Wear comfortable clothing

Be On Time to school

Bring 2 #2 Pencils each day

THINK POSITIVE during the test

YEARBOOK

2011-2012 Yearbooks can be purchased by sending $23.00 in an envelope to Mr. Mavridis in Room 205. Yearbooks contain classroom pictures as well as sports teams, clubs and special event pictures taken throughout the year. Purchase a book full of memories today. A table will also be set up during report card pick-up night for those who would like to make a purchase.

Canty School envisions a continued collaboration between staff, students, parents and community to achieve every child’s greatest potential. MISSION

Canty School encourages and nurtures an appreciation for higher education with an emphasis on the individual success of every child. We believe in providing a curriculum rich in academic excellence, technology, fine and performing arts, with the development of healthy social and emotional skills in a safe and least restrictive environment. The outcome of the Canty experience is well-rounded, respectful, responsible and productive global citizens.

HISTORY OF CANTY

Arthur E. Canty was an engineer/custodian in the Henderson School for many years. Mr. Canty was a leader and held numerous positions of trust, including president of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 143-143B, Administrative Assistant to the Office of Civilian Defense for the City of Chicago during WWII, and officer of the American Legion, a fraternal organization for military veterans. Mr. Canty served as a United States Army sergeant in France in World War I. As a civilian during World War II he spearheaded innovative campaigns to help the war effort such as collecting thousands of used razor blades to fabricate military vehicles.

Arthur E. Canty died of a heart attack in his home on Chicago's south side on August 9, 1946. He was 55 years old. He and his wife Alice had two daughters: Alice Marie and Jean.

Grace Street School was renamed Arthur E. Canty in 1953 and continues to honor him today.
